The Evolution of Permitting and Plan Review

The way governments process building permits and review plans has evolved over time - from predominantly manual and paper-based, to semi-manual, to fully digital.

Traditionally, governments have relied on paper-based permitting and plan review processes that are slow and time-consuming for citizens and staff; or a semi-digital system where some automation is used, but manual steps are still required. Both are linear and disconnected.

Increasingly, however, realizing the importance and many benefits that come from moving building permitting services online, governments are embracing integrated permitting and plan review solutions to improve everyday processes, speed up often lengthy issuance times, and attract and retain talent that has come to expect access to the tools that enable them to work efficiently.

Technology Plays a Role in Hiring and Retaining Staff

While working remotely was once considered a luxury few were able to experience, it’s now become the norm. Thanks to a pandemic that necessitated social distancing, the way we think about work and productivity has completely changed.

For the majority of employers, COVID validated that productivity wasn’t tied to being in-office - staff could work from anywhere and still be as - if not more - productive than when they were in the office full-time.

Similarly, for government building permitting departments, the sudden shift to remote work, and in some cases, scramble for quick-fix technology solutions, not only proved that staff could be productive at home, but validated that everyday permitting and plan review processes can in fact be automated successfully.

With an integrated permitting and plan review solution and the right tools, jobs are simply better and more manageable for the people in them, and it’s far easier to attract and retain talent. Staff expect to be supported in order to do their best possible work, and a large part of that comes from having access to empowering technology that makes their day easier and more efficient.

The Clariti-ePLANREVIEW Advantage

In today’s digital-first world, the key to efficiency is not to try and eliminate silos entirely, but to connect them with the right tools.

Offering complementary functionality from Clariti’s Enterprise permitting software and e-PlanSoft’s e-PLANREVIEW, the Clariti-e-PLANREVIEW integration allows for every step of the end-to-end permit issuance process to be completed seamlessly within one integrated system. Applicants can apply for a permit and manage their submissions online, and staff can complete workflows from start to finish whether at home or in the office - no other application required. With everything centralized, staff save time and effort, productivity improves, and projects remain on-track.

How it Works:
Clariti-e-PLANREVIEW permitting and plan review software integrationFully integrated so users can switch between solutions unnoticed, the integration offers easy access to services through Clariti’s Online Community Portal, where applicants can apply for a permit, submit plans, review markups, upload plan submittals, and pay fees; and seamless navigation and data sharing between Clariti and e-PLANREVIEW with the click of a button.
